Overview

About glass shelves in Seattle

Most of our shelf work lands in bath niches, display walls, and the shelf that runs across a gym or dressing-room mirror wall. Each has different load, span, and visual considerations.

Bath niches and vanity recesses

A tiled niche or vanity recess gets 3/8” tempered on hidden floating brackets, so all that shows inside the opening is a clean horizontal line. In a bath context where the shelf gets wiped down regularly, we run polished edges only and skip bevels. Spans here are usually short (under 24”) and supported on both sides by the niche walls themselves, so bracket loading is minimal.

Display wall shelving

Display walls include open kitchen shelving alternatives, living-room media walls, and home libraries. Here the choice is usually between visible bracket hardware in a finish that matches the room’s metal accents, or hidden floating brackets that let the glass appear unsupported. Hidden brackets require wall framing in the right places; we measure and lay these out before ordering. Visible brackets are easier to retrofit into an existing wall.

Long spans and thicker glass

Once a span passes 36”, 1/2” tempered becomes the right choice. The thicker panel resists visible deflection under typical surface loads and looks more substantial. Longer shelves also benefit from a third bracket at the midpoint or a continuous channel mount along the back edge.

Every edge is polished. No rough or raw edges get installed. For bevel-edge requests on display shelving where the bevel is part of the look, that’s a separate fabrication step; we quote bevels as a per-edge upcharge.
